Advanced Projects This Week

This page will be updated constantly throughout the year based on the work that you are being asked to do.  There will be links to other pages with more specific details as to what you will need to do each week.

Always remember:
1. Clear your Canvas the first day a new project is assigned.
2. Fill in your time card with what you are working on each day because by Friday you might not remember. Be honest with the score you give yourself; off task behavior that you do not record will affect both your academic and citizenship grades.

Over the first 6 weeks of class, advanced students must show understanding and competence with four of the machines that you will be asked to use on projects for the rest of the year. Please take your time reading the directions as I need every student to know the basics of every machine. Do not rely on others to tell you what to do as you will need to demonstrate to your teacher your proficiency before moving on.

Over the next week, you will need to design and model, three identical sets of fins and nose cones for your straw rockets.  You will start by creating one set as a prototype and once you are sure that it fits and works well with the launcher, you will print two more copies from the original file. Please watch the first video below all of the way through.  The rest of the videos are there to help guide you, but are optional.

Making Adjustments After Your First Print (Step 5)
1) 3d Printers
You will be asked to create a backpack tag like you did last year, but must show that you know how to use a teacher's workstation to convert your .stl to a .makerbot for the printer that you have been assigned and you will need to show that you can change out the filament from one color to another prior to being allowed to print.

2) Laser
For this machine, you will need to design and create two different projects.  One on an aluminum dog tag, the other on a 4" x 5" piece of birch or acrylic. For the second project, you must show proficiency with an interior cut (hole) and exterior cut (outline). Be careful with your settings and depth so that you do not set fire to or melt the project that you have designed.

3) CNC Mill (Carvey)
For this you will be creating a double sided 6" x 6" placard. This may have the same image on both sides, but designing opposites may be more fun.  Although the Carvey is able to make holes to allow it to be hung, please do not have the Carvey drill all of the way through the material - it rarely ends well for the waste board.

4) Vinyl Cutter

For this machine, you once again will be creating two different projects.  One will be a sticker for a water bottle, laptop or folder that belongs to you (please do not affix this sticker or its weeding to anything that does not owed by you), the other will be an "iron on" or heat transferred image that will require you to bring in a clothing item or backpack (anything that will not melt).

These tasks may be attempted in any order, but you must complete one task correctly once you have started before moving on to another task.  Please get your teacher to confirm your work before you attempt to use any materials that will be destroyed in the process.
